Basic rules for print and electronic sources

The MLA system of in-text citations, which depends heavily on authors' names and page numbers, was created in the early 1980s with print sources in mind. Because some of today's electronic sources have unclear authorship and lack page numbers, they present a special challenge. Nevertheless, the basic rules are the same for both print and electronic sources.

The models in this section (items 1–5) show how the MLA system usually works and explain what to do if your source has no author or page numbers.

1. AUTHOR NAMED IN A SIGNAL PHRASEOrdinarily, introduce the material being cited with a signal phrase that includes the author's name. In addition to preparing readers for the source, the signal phrase allows you to keep the parenthetical citation brief.

Christine Haughney reports that shortly after Japan made it illegal
to use a handheld phone while driving, "accidents caused by using
the phones dropped by 75 percent" (A8).

The signal phrase — Christine Haughney reports that — names the author; the parenthetical citation gives the page number where the quoted words may be found.

Notice that the period follows the parenthetical citation. When a quotation ends with a question mark or an exclamation point, leave the end punctuation inside the quotation mark and add a period after the parentheses: " . . . ?" (8).

4. PAGE NUMBER UNKNOWNYou may omit the page number if a work lacks page numbers, as is the case with many Web sources. Although printouts from Web sites usually show page numbers, printers don't always provide the same page breaks; for this reason, MLA recommends treating such sources as unpaginated.

The California Highway Patrol opposes restrictions on the use of
phones while driving, claiming that distracted drivers can already
be prosecuted (Jacobs).

According to Jacobs, the California Highway Patrol opposes restric-
tions on the use of phones while driving, claiming that distracted
drivers can already be prosecuted.

When the pages of a Web source are stable (as in PDF files), however, supply a page number in your in-text citation.

NOTE: If a Web source numbers its paragraphs or screens, give the abbreviation "par." or "pars." or the word "screen" or "screens" in the parentheses: (Smith, par. 4).

Sophie's paragraph

Tibet has been fighting for their independence for more than 20 years now, and China has been fighting against their independence movement all the while. Apparently, their techniques have not been effective, so China used physical force to show that they believe that they are stronger, better, and more powerful. For example, the Chinese security force has surrounded itself around Tibet, to stop the Tibetan protesters. The Dali Lama says, “China has brought untold suffering and destruction.”(Gyaltesan) Hundreds and thousands of Tibetans have died, just by expressing how they feel. The Dali Lama explains how that even today the Tibetans live in fear because being themselves and believing in their religion is dangerous and could lead to their death. The worst part is, the Chinese government thinks that the Dali Lama is lying. How can one lie about thousands of deaths going on? Fortunately, the Dali Lama plans to stay and support the Tibetans with all that he can.

Please help.

For the last fifty years China has taken over Tibet and has slowly taken away their rights. One huge right that the Chinese government is taking away is the right for religion and also to be a religious leader. China has now started to close down and empty out monasteries is the city of Lhasa. Many of the people who are interviewed answer questions as anonymous for the fear of government officials finding them and hurting them. Also the Chinese have put into act a very strict set of laws about monks wearing their robes outside the monastery. They are not allowed to wear them in public or even their own homes. Chinese police even come to monk’s homes to see if they are wearing them and if they are they usually bring them to prison. An article from the New York Times interviews a man and he says “Monks no longer in the monasteries are barred from wearing their robes in public, the monk said, and the police check on the monks at home, at times hauling some off to prison. The monk said Tibetan policemen came to his home three times a month”(Edward Wong). Its just a terrible thing that the Chinese people are doing to the Tibetans and its time that people and the U.N. get involved to help separate Tibet from China’s rule.

Please critique

please add suggestions! this is extremely rough, I've had like NO time to do any homework. I will work on it tonight, and fix it. I am good with presenting stuff as well.

I changed my choice to Ricky's second bubble on the bubble map.

"            The effects of the issues in Tibet have resulted in the want to return to a stable political society.  Many leaders have risen to the occasion and led up rises and marches, as well as peace talks. According to Christopher Bodeen from the Associated Press, “Last year, representatives of the Dalai Lama and China's government held three different rounds of talks but little progress was made”. Although the peace talks are present, and have valid points, they haven’t had much success. Quoting the Chinese  Premier Wen Jiabao’s response defending Chinese rule, Bodeen writes, ‘“the policies we have adopted are right’”. Since the peace talks weren’t effective, many Tibetan people took to the streets, in protest. Bodeen writes, “Thousands of police and paramilitary soldiers have been patrolling and manning checkpoints across Tibet and Tibetan-inhabited regions in western China in recent weeks, ready to head off any repeat of last year's wide-scale anti-government demonstrations”. Although the Tibetan uprisings and marches may not sway the Chinese government, the large scale use of military reflects an impact."

Intro/Con.

The crisis of Tibet has been a long debated topic. After China made itself known as the ruling force over Tibet, many of Tibet's freedoms were taken along with. The Chinese government made Tibet into a true Chinese nation by trying to eliminate all knowledge of the Tibetan traditions and replacing their culture with that of the Chinese. The main causes for outrage of the Tibetan citizens have been the ruthless quelling of independence movements and the exile of the Dalai Llama.

All of these events show how much freedom means to these people. After the shutting down of monasteries to ensure the elimination of their traditions and the mass killings of independent radicals, the world should look to find a way to make peace between China and Tibet by making Tibet a self-governed nation. The Dalai Llama has been fighting for a long time and it's about time organizations like the UN should start helping.
